Doctor of Philosophy in Health & Rehabilitation Science

The Ph.D. in Health and Rehabilitation Science (Ph.D. HRS) is an interdisciplinary doctoral program designed to prepare students to become leaders in research, education, and health policy. With three concentrations—Pathology and Impairment, Functional Limitations, and Health Services—the program promotes cross-disciplinary collaboration and systems-level thinking to address complex health and rehabilitation challenges. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the program, some overlap among concentration areas is expected and encouraged to foster integrated perspectives and collaborative approaches. The program cultivates team scientists capable of translating evidence into practice across diverse settings. The overarching objective is to develop scholars and educators who will expand and transform the field of health and rehabilitation science through innovative research, leadership, and teaching excellence.

Curriculum

The Professional Development and Research Cores are required to ensure that all students receive a solid foundation in Health and Rehabilitation Science, a teaching practicum, and a comprehensive overview of essential issues in the profession. Students will gain the necessary research skills, including design, methodology, and analysis, to position themselves as leading research scholars in the field.

The concentration area will be designed and supervised by the primary mentor and doctoral committee. This will be based on the student's prior education and experience, specialization area, and research interests.

International students enrolled in the Ph.D. in Health & Rehabilitation Science Program must enroll in accordance with federal regulations.

Requires a minimum of 90 credit hours organized as follows:

  • Professional Development Core: 14 credits
  • Research Core: 19-credit minimum
  • Concentration Core: 30 credits in Pathology & Impairment, Functional Limitations, or Health Services
  • Dissertation: 12-credit minimum
